  • Parcel with Goodies. (동생의 선물)

Aerial shot of the unpacked Red Cross Parcel from Korea.

This morning I received a parcel from my brother in Korea. It was sent last week via Priority Mail, but due to the heightened security as a result of dubious terrorist threats on the States, all internal parcels from overseas had to go through thorough inspections prior to deliveries.

    My favorite milkcandy! Howdy Cow!

Thankfully, the parcel from my dear brother arrived in mint condition, and I was so happy to receive it with rejoice that it might be akin to the feeling of the British POWs (“Prisoners of War) interned in Colditz, the old castle converted into a POW camp in the former East Germany during World War II, when they received Red Cross parcels mostly packed with food, such as chocolates, canned food, candies, cigarettes, and etc. in the days of boring, dreary confinement and of uncertain future.

The best chocolate in the world.

I saw the POWs’ excitement when the parcels were distributed by the German captors with their exuberant acclimation of “Hurrah! A Red Cross Parcel!” on the BBC classic drama series of “Colditz.”(Click the word, and it will lead you to the series of the drama. It’s quite interesting to watch.) Hence the same acclimation for the parcel unpacked as shown in the above picture taken.

  • Yoshi’s Guitar World and his Finess

Today I would like to introduce to you all my colleague and accomplished guitarist Mr. Yoshi Hiraoka and his fine demonstrative playing of the new awesome Takamine electric-acoustic guitar. What a smooth operation! Mr. Hiraoka is also a lead guitarist of his band “The Spinal Crackers.” Moreover, he suavely inducted me to finally possess a guitar (which is electric-acoustic Fernandez “Ferdi” guitar) and to play it myself. Many kudos to Yoshi-san 🙂

  • My Guitar Practice – “As Tears Go By” by The Rolling Stones

    My electric-acoustic guitar
    My electric-acoustic guitar “Ferdi”

This song is in my repertoire for learning to play the guitar. Today I am posting “As Tears Go By” which is appropriately easy to play for a beginner like me.

The set of the chords are major, the movements of the chord changing can be smoothly achieved. Now the only thing I should master is to change the chords more swiftly and dexterously so that I can keep the rhythm of the original version of the song.

I sing the song while playing the guitar, and I love it! The chords for this song are: G, A, C, D, and Em as shown with the lyrics below:

    Let's Play it!
                              Let’s play it!

    (G) It is the (A) evening of the (C) day. (D)
    (G) I sit and (A) watch the children (C) play. (D)
    (C) Smiling faces (D) I can see, (G) but not for (Em) me.
    (C) I sit and watch as tears (Em) go (D) by.

    (G) My riches (A) can’t buy every (C) thing. (D)
    (G) I want to (A) hear the children (C) sing. (D)
    (C) All I hear (D) is the sound (G) of rain falling (Em) on the ground.
    (C) I sit and watch as tears (Em) go (D) by.

    (G) It is the (A) evening of the (C) day. (D)
    (G) I sit and (A) watch the children (C) play. (D)
    (C) Doing things I (D) used to do (G) they think are (Em) new.
    (C) I sit and watch as tears (Em) go (D) by.

    (G) (A) (C) (D)
    (G) (A) (C) (D)

Keep on rollin’ because indeed practice makes perfect.

  • To tame a Spirit of Writing: How to start, describe, and end your writing of any kind.

writing1When do you have a writer’s block in writing an essay, email, a letter, or just about anything? Introduction? Body? or Conclusion? My writer’s block begins to form in writing an introduction. How to begin requires clarity, creativity, and cleverness of me in terms of presenting a subject matter of writing lucid and interesting. Everyone has of course different points when it comes to encountering his/her writer’s block. But most of the time, such difficulty results from a lack of organization of an idea, a thought sprung from the mind that needs to be disciplined. Thus, I have briefly summarized the following methods of taming your free spirit of writing:

    Slide4

    A. Writing as a four-step process:

    1. You think of things you want to say-as many as possible as quickly as possible.
    2. You figure out a sensible order for those thoughts; that is, your outline.
    3. With the outline as your guide, you write out a draft.
    4. After setting the draft aside for a matter of minutes or days, you come back and edit it.

As developed by Dr. Betty Sue Flowers, a University of Texas English professor, each of the above-referenced steps are also called by the following names according to the corresponding intellectual functions:

    (1)  Mad man, the creative spirit who generates ideas (Brainstorming);

    • Your essential Imagination, however sloppy and raw it may be
    • In this stage, you are going for copious thoughts as many as possible
    • Jotting down ideas in the absence of sentences and paragraphs
    • Fast and furious outpourings of thoughts, ideas.
    • Need to protect against the Judge disapproving the sloppiness.
    • Save the Judge for later stage in the writing; otherwise, the Madman could be at considerable risk, causing ‘writer’s block”.
    • Writers commonly have little battles in their heads if the hypercritical Judge is allowed to start “censoring” ideas even as the Madman is trying to develop them.
    • “Keep the Judge out of the realm of the Madman!”
    • The Non-linear outlined ideas in resemblance of the Madman frame of mind.

    (2)  Architect, the planner who ensures that the structure is sound and appealing (Syntax builder to make a sensible, effective sentence structure;

    • He must arrange the ideas with sensible sentence structures with the right words.
    • An architectural design/outline with specifications is to be made for the next step.
    • However, for the Architect to do his job well, the Madman should be given a complete free rein to exercise his right of free thoughts without linguistic boundaries.

    (3)   Carpenter, the builder who makes the corners square and the counters level (Crafting of words for the effect of articulation); and

    • He is the “leader”, who will lead the writing to an effective force of communicability.
    • According to the Architect’s design with specifications, the Carpenter builds the draft.
    • Ideally, the Carpenter writes quickly, treating the outline as a series of gaps that need filling in.
    • In fact, although this stage is where writing begins in earnest, the carpentry is the hardest part of writing in terms of producing a draft.
    • The reason for this difficulty results from the absence of the Madman (Thinking of Ideas) and Architect (Sequencing the Ideas) stage to singlehandedly use the Carpenter (Verbalizing the Ideas).
    • Such disregard for these Two Men stages is out of the context; the Carpenter’s job would be relatively easy with the proper jobs by these two men.
    • Keep the autocratic Judge out of sight at this stage; otherwise, you will slow down yourself. The Carpenter is a Writer, not an Editor.
    • Still, though, the Carpenter must exercise considerable discretion in following the Architect’s plans by making architectural refinements here and there when producing paragraphs and sections.

    (4) Judge, who checks to see whether anything has gone wrong (Editing of the product to ensure communicability thereof).

    • The Judge finally takes over when you have a raw draft.
    • You can now fix the ragged edges.
    • The Judge does everything from smoothing over rough transitions to correcting grammar, spelling, and typos. (The Smooth Syntax Operator)
    • Or the alternative name is “Janitor” who tidies up little messes.

    B. Visualization of the works (as in a legal case)

    1. The nonlinear Whirlybird by the Mad Man
    1. The Design Plan by the Architect

    1)   Main issue: The cause of action and the question thereon. e.g., “Upon being reprimanded, Penfold threatened his supervisor by saying, “I am gonna get you for this!” The supervisor immediately fired him. Was the termination justified?

    2)  Detailed factual statement

    3)  General principles re the cause of action. That is, the evidence on each element of his cause of action, causation, and damages.e.g., re: threatened violence at work

    • Corporate policy statement
    • Type of threat involved
    • General/specific
    • Violent/nonviolent
    • Effect on others
    • Coworkers
    • Target
    • Examples relating to safety in modern workplace

    4)  Caselaw on similar threats

    5)  Decision in this case: the facts suggest that threat was real. Internal appellate-review board agreed.

    6)  Conclusion

  • Role of Money and Religiosity in Determining Ethical Beliefs

imagesOne’s money ethic, the understanding of the function of money at individual levels, and the religious perspective on consumer ethical behavior based upon one’s deep-rooted religious beliefs, “Religiosity,” are dominant factors that heavily influence on consumer ethics. According to the results of a recent study by Scott J. Vitell, Professor of Marketing at the University of Mississippi, and et al. on the relationships of the roles of money ethics and religiosity with consumers’ ethical decision making, both of the determinants equally construct primary ethical beliefs in the context of regarding consumer practices with the following findings: (1) Money Ethics (“Love of Money”): a negative factor explaining unethical beliefs; and (2) Religiosity (“Intrinsic Religiousness”): a positive factor resulting in ethical beliefs. Therefore, this essay serves to explain such relationships of the aforementioned determinants in shaping consumer attitudes/behavior on the grounds of these findings.

    (1) Money Ethics (“Love of Money”): a negative factor explaining unethical beliefs

The perception of the role of money at the individual level, or “Money Ethics,” which measures the ethical meanings attributed to money, has a negative effect on consumer ethics/beliefs. In fact, one’s money ethics is generally associated with “love of money” with a negative nuisance as proposed by Thomas Tang, with his devising of the MES (“Money Ethics Scale”) by which people assign the values of money.

thinker-clipart-thinking-person-mdAccording to the result of a nationwide (U.S.) questionnaire in 2004 sent to sample of 1000 adult consumers composed of reasonably well-educated men of 45 years old or younger with a median income of $55,000 per year, the respondents who regarded the value of money as a means of becoming “rich” showed lenient attitude toward dubious consumer behavior based upon the following dimensions by viewing them not necessarily as wrong, if not criminal: (i) the passive dimension (e.g., a situation in which the customer receives too much change from the seller by mistake but does nothing); (ii) the active, legal dimension (e.g., not telling the truth in negotiation of the price of a new car); and (iii) the no harm/no foul dimension (e.g., downloading free music from a website on your computer without buying an actual CD).

Such hypothesis proposed by Tang et al. (2002) provides that one’s money ethics plays a vital role in determining unethical behavior because the importance of the value of money precedes one’s ethical sensitiveness ascribed to the role of money. Correspondingly, the value of money as the measurement of one’s wealth is normally associated with the love of money that regards such controversial consumer behavior as “tolerable” subsequent to the hypothesis that the individual money ethics produces unethical attitude toward consumer ethics/beliefs as a result of the questionnaire.

wpid-snoopy-writing(2) Religiosity (“Intrinsic Religiousness”): a positive factor resulting in ethical beliefs

One’s fundamental religious belief, or “Religiosity,” which is the internalization of role of expectations formed by religion, is a powerful co-element that has a positive effect on consumers’ ethical beliefs in the U.S. As a matter of fact, one’s religiosity is a set of principles by which one abides in determining the ethical nature of consumer attitudes and behavior.

In accordance with the findings established by Scott J. Vitell et al. (2005), the role of intrinsic religiousness as a positive factor contributes to making ethical decisions in consumer behavior. Based on the result of the aforesaid questionnaire conducted in 2004, the sample population with innate religious belief viewed the dimensions of controversial consumer activities such as the aforesaid as unacceptable or wrong, save “(iii) the no harm/no foul dimension” (e.g., downloading free music from a website on your computer without buying an actual CD).

Thus, the hypothesis that one’s religiosity is a powerful co-determinant of consumer ethical belief system corresponds to the perception of the doubtful consumer behavior as wrong as proved by the result of the questionnaire.

In light of the above, both one’s money ethics and inherent religious belief system as personal attributes play significant roles in making decisions in all aspects of consumer practices subsequent to the findings of the questionnaire conducted to the adult population in the U.S. However, in order to establish a firm theory on the relationship of the money ethics and the religiosity, it is suggested that a wide variety of population, including the comparison of men and women in terms of the degree of religious importance in relation to making ethical judgment, and more inclusive demographic population should be considered in a further research.
